About Pasikudah
Pasikudah is one of those beaches that travellers hear described as exceptional and still find themselves surprised. The bay is protected by a natural horseshoe reef that keeps the water extraordinarily calm — on a typical May-to-September day, the bay is more like a swimming pool than the ocean. The seabed drops very gradually, meaning you can walk a kilometre offshore in thigh-deep water. This makes it exceptional for families with young children and non-swimmers.
The water colour is a vivid turquoise shifting to deep blue at the reef edge — consistently cited among the most photogenic beaches in Sri Lanka. A short swim or snorkel to the reef reveals coral gardens and tropical fish, while the beach itself is pure white sand without rocks or weeds.
Pasikudah has seen significant resort development since the early 2010s — several large hotels now line the bay. But the beach remains public and the reef is protected. The east coast season (May–September) means Pasikudah is an excellent option when the west coast is under monsoon.

What to See & Do
Pasikudah Bay
The bay itself is the attraction — extraordinarily shallow, calm, and clear water protected by a natural reef. Walk, swim, or float 800m offshore. Best light is morning; the afternoon western sun creates glare.
Pasikudah Reef Snorkelling
The outer edge of the protecting reef drops into deeper water with healthy coral gardens, sea fans, and diverse reef fish. Snorkel gear rented at beach shops; guided dive trips available from resort dive centres.
Batticaloa Day Trip
30 km south — the Dutch-built Batticaloa Fort on a lagoon island, the famous Kallady Bridge, and the unique Singing Fish phenomenon (musical sounds from the lagoon on full moon nights).
Kalkudah Beach
The smaller, less developed bay immediately north of Pasikudah — similar calm water but fewer resort hotels. A 10-minute walk separates the two bays.
Getting There from Colombo
Via A1 highway through Habarana and Polonnaruwa, then A15 to Kalkudah.
Bus to Valaichchenai or Batticaloa, then tuk-tuk to Pasikudah (30 minutes).
Best Time to Visit
East coast season May–September. Avoid October–January (north-east monsoon). April is transition month.
