About Trincomalee
Trincomalee — Trinco to locals — has one of the great natural harbours of the world: a deep-water bay large enough to shelter entire naval fleets, framed by headlands and backed by ancient Hindu temples. The British, Dutch, Portuguese, and French all fought over it, and today its strategic position on the north-east coast makes it a gateway to some of Sri Lanka's most unspoiled coastline.
Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, stretching north of the town, rival the Maldives for clarity and turquoise colour. Pigeon Island, just 300m offshore from Nilaveli, is a national park and one of Sri Lanka's best snorkelling and diving sites — home to blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and abundant coral gardens.
The whale-watching season (April–September) makes Trincomalee one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales and sperm whales from boat trips. The massive Fort Frederick headland, topped with the Koneswaram Temple — a revered Hindu site that partially overhang the cliffs — is another unforgettable Trinco landmark.

What to See & Do
Pigeon Island National Park
A small coral island 300m offshore — one of Sri Lanka's two marine national parks. Excellent snorkelling with blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and intact coral gardens in gin-clear water.
Koneswaram Temple (Thirukonamalai)
An ancient Hindu temple to Lord Shiva perched on Swami Rock — a sacred 130m cliff above the sea. One of the five Ishwaram Shiva temples of Sri Lanka, with a dramatic ocean-facing setting.
Nilaveli Beach
A 3 km stretch of powder-white sand with calm, crystal-clear turquoise water — one of Sri Lanka's finest beaches, far less crowded than the south coast. Pigeon Island is visible from the shore.
Whale Watching Boat Tours
Blue whales and sperm whales regularly feed in the deep waters off Trincomalee from April to September — among the most reliable sightings in the Indian Ocean.
Fort Frederick
A Portuguese-then-Dutch fortified headland above the harbour, crowned by the Koneswaram Temple — walkable grounds with old cannon emplacements and sweeping views of Trincomalee harbour.
Uppuveli Beach
A quieter stretch of beach 5 km south of Nilaveli — a more local, budget-friendly atmosphere with excellent guesthouses and fresh seafood restaurants right on the sand.
Getting There from Colombo
Direct train from Colombo Fort via Habarana. Book in advance — limited daily services.
Via A6 through Habarana. Road is good but long — consider breaking the journey at Sigiriya.
FitsAir operates Colombo Ratmalana → Trincomalee. Limited schedule — book well ahead.
Trincomalee is often combined with a Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa loop for a complete north-east circuit.
Best Time to Visit
The east coast is dry when the west coast is wet. Best April–September for beaches and whale watching.
