About Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is a small, crescent-shaped bay on the east coast of Sri Lanka that has become one of the most famous surf destinations in Asia. The main point break — known simply as 'The Main Point' or 'A-Bay' — is a long, peeling right-hander that works best from May to October when the south-west swell lines up with the headland to produce waves of 2–6 feet, consistently rideable for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Beyond The Main Point, a dozen other breaks surround A-Bay, from beginner-friendly beach breaks at Pottuvil Point to the more challenging Elephant Rock and Whiskey Point to the north. The bay's remote east coast location means it retains a genuinely laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere that has largely resisted the overcommercialization found on the west coast.
Between sessions, the surrounding landscape offers its own rewards: Kumana (Yala East) National Park nearby for bird watching and elephants; ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple ruins on the beach; and Pottuvil Lagoon for kayaking through mangroves where mugger crocodiles and water buffalo are regularly spotted.

What to See & Do
Main Point (A-Bay Point Break)
The iconic right-hand point break — a long peeling wave that runs for 200m along the headland. Best May–October when south-west swell lines up perfectly. Consistently rated among the top 10 surf spots in the world.
Pottuvil Point
The most forgiving break in the area — a gentle beach break 4 km north with multiple surf schools and board rentals. Ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Sunrise here is exceptional.
Whiskey Point
A fun right-hander 8 km north of Main Point — consistent, less crowded, and accessible to intermediate surfers. The surrounding area is still largely undeveloped with a frontier feel.
Pottuvil Lagoon
A pristine mangrove lagoon immediately behind the bay — guided kayak tours paddle through channels where mugger crocodiles bask, water buffalo wade, and kingfishers and sea eagles hunt. Dawn is the best time.
Muhudu Maha Viharaya
Ancient Buddhist ruins 2,000 years old, rising directly from the sand dunes at the water's edge — a stupa, moonstone, and carved guardstones half-reclaimed by beach vegetation. One of Sri Lanka's most atmospheric archaeological sites.
Kumana National Park (Yala East)
A coastal wetland and wildlife sanctuary 45 km south — famous for its wading bird colonies (painted storks, herons, ibis) during breeding season May–July, plus leopards, elephants, and crocodiles.
Getting There from Colombo
Long drive via A4 through Ratnapura or A1/A5 through Kandy and Ampara. The final road from Ampara is good.
Change at Ampara. Several daily express buses to Ampara from Colombo, then local bus to A-Bay.
FitsAir flights to Batticaloa (closest airport, 75 km north). Limited schedule.
Arugam Bay's remoteness is part of its appeal — the journey is worth it. Most surfers base here for a minimum of 3–5 nights.
Best Time to Visit
Surf season is May–October when the south-west swell reaches the east coast. The east coast is calm and dry while the west coast is in monsoon.
Traveller Tips
- ▸Main Point works best 2 hours before and after low tide — check tide charts daily
- ▸Rent boards locally (USD 5–10/day) rather than bringing your own — easier for the journey
- ▸Book accommodation for peak July–August months well in advance — the bay's limited guesthouses fill up
- ▸The local surf instructors at Pottuvil Point are skilled — worth hiring for first sessions
- ▸Sunrise is the best time to paddle out — wind is calm and crowds are minimal
- ▸Kumana (Yala East) bird sanctuary is 45 km south — excellent for a half-day trip during a flat spell
