About Nilaveli

Nilaveli is widely considered one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches — a 10 km stretch of near-perfect white sand and clear turquoise water that remained relatively undeveloped until the 2000s due to its location in the north-east, which was inaccessible during the civil conflict. The result is a beach that still feels genuinely unspoilt compared to the crowded south-west coast.

The beach faces north-east, so the best season is May to September when the south-west monsoon leaves the east coast sunny and calm — the opposite of the west coast. This makes Nilaveli perfect for those visiting Sri Lanka during the European summer.

Pigeon Island Marine National Park, a short boat ride from Nilaveli beach, protects one of Sri Lanka's best remaining coral reefs and is home to blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and hundreds of species of tropical fish. The island itself is named for the rock pigeons that nest in its caves.

Highlights

  • Snorkel and dive at Pigeon Island Marine National Park — blacktip reef sharks and turtles
  • 10 km of pristine white sand beach with almost no development
  • Best east coast season May–September — sun when the west coast has monsoon
  • Excellent whale watching (blue and sperm whales) off Trincomalee from April to October
  • Completely calm, swimmable water — ideal for families and non-swimmers
  • Day-trip to Trincomalee — Fort Frederick, Koneswaram Temple, and natural harbour

East coast — best May to September. October to April brings north-east monsoon, rougher seas.

Traveller Tips

  • Visit Pigeon Island in the morning — afternoon winds reduce visibility
  • Apply coral-safe sunscreen only — the national park prohibits chemical sunscreen
  • The stretch of beach north of the major hotels is completely empty and beautiful
  • Nilaveli has few restaurants — your guesthouse or hotel is usually the best meal option
  • Combine with Trincomalee (2 nights) for the complete east coast experience
  • May to September is when most foreign visitors are on the west coast — east coast is blissfully uncrowded
