About Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu covers 1,317 km² of north-west Sri Lanka and is the country's largest national park by area. Unlike Yala's open scrub, Wilpattu is characterised by dense dry forest and a unique feature found nowhere else on earth: naturally formed circular lakes called villus, which fill with rainwater and attract wildlife year-round. Over 60 villus dot the park landscape — each one a potential sighting spot for the animals that come to drink.

The park reopened to tourism in 2010 after 23 years of closure during the civil conflict — the longest it had been shut. The result is a wildlife landscape that recovered substantially during that absence. Wilpattu now has the second-highest leopard density in Sri Lanka after Yala, but with far fewer tourists — making sightings feel more genuine. Sloth bears, Asian elephants, spotted deer, water buffalo, and the endemic painted stork are all common.

The park is less organised than Yala — fewer roads, less infrastructure, more wilderness. This is part of its appeal for serious wildlife enthusiasts who prefer a rawer safari experience.

Highlights

  • Leopard sightings at the natural villu lakes — second-highest density in Sri Lanka
  • Far fewer tourists than Yala — genuine wilderness safari atmosphere
  • Spot sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles, and 200+ bird species
  • The unique villu lake ecosystem — circular natural lakes found nowhere else on earth
  • Ancient ruins within the park — Kali Villu area contains archaeological sites
  • Combine with Anuradhapura (45 km) for a cultural-wildlife circuit

Traveller Tips

  • Arrange your jeep safari from accommodation in Puttalam or Nochchiyagama the night before
  • Morning safaris (6–10 AM) are best for leopard sightings — animals active before the heat
  • Bring binoculars — the dense jungle means animals are often spotted at a distance first
  • Wilpattu is significantly less visited than Yala — book the same park experience with half the crowds
  • Combine with Anuradhapura (45 km) for a two-night circuit: culture + wildlife
  • Leech socks advisable after rain — the wetter areas near villus have resident populations
