About Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya has emerged as one of Asia's premier kitesurfing destinations — a thin spit of land on Sri Lanka's north-west coast that encloses a vast, shallow lagoon with flat-water conditions ideal for learning and freestyle riding. The strong, consistent winds (15–30 knots) blow from May to October, making Kalpitiya a top spot during the south-west monsoon when much of the country is wet.
The lagoon is also a nursery for spinner dolphins — pods of 100–500 dolphins are routinely encountered on boat trips, often surfing the bow wave alongside the vessel. Whale sightings (sperm and blue whales) are common in the deeper water beyond the lagoon from November to April.
The peninsula itself is a quiet, wild stretch — a string of small fishing villages, sand dunes, casuarina trees, and Dutch colonial ruins. Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, just offshore, protects one of Sri Lanka's most extensive coral systems. The combination of adventure water sports and wildlife encounters makes Kalpitiya genuinely unique.

What to See & Do
Kitesurfing on the Lagoon
A vast flat-water lagoon with consistent 15–30 knot winds May to October — ideal for beginners learning in shallow, calm water, and experts practising freestyle tricks. Several IKO-certified schools operate on the beach.
Dolphin & Whale Watching
Spinner dolphin pods of 100–500 animals are reliably encountered just outside the lagoon. Blue and sperm whales visit November to April in the deeper offshore waters. Sunrise boat trips are most productive.
Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary
One of Sri Lanka's largest coral reef systems — a chain of reefs 40 km north of Kalpitiya protecting manta rays, sea turtles, and hundreds of fish species. A day-trip by boat for snorkelling and diving.
Kalpitiya Peninsula Drive
A long, thin strip of sand dunes, casuarina trees, and fishing villages stretching 35 km north — almost no tourists, pristine lagoon on one side and Indian Ocean on the other. Rent a bicycle or motorbike.
Getting There from Colombo
Via Puttalam and north along the coast road. Last section is a rough peninsula track.
Bus to Puttalam, then local bus to Kalpitiya. Infrequent connections.
