About Negombo

Negombo sits at the northern edge of the Western Province coast, straddling a vast lagoon and the open Indian Ocean. For most visitors it's an overnight buffer before or after a flight — but those who linger discover a genuinely atmospheric town shaped by four centuries of Portuguese and Dutch colonial rule.

The Dutch Canal, dug in the 17th century to transport cinnamon, still threads through the city and into the lagoon — you can kayak it at sunrise. The fish market on the lagoon shore is one of the most vivid in South Asia: dugout outrigger boats called oruwa land their catch from midnight onwards, and the auction is in full swing by dawn.

The beach itself runs for several kilometres north of the town centre, lined with guesthouses, seafood restaurants and relatively calm surf. The Catholic legacy of Portuguese colonisation is everywhere — Negombo has more churches per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Asia.

Highlights

  • Watch dawn at the fish market — outrigger boats landing their catch from midnight
  • Kayak or boat the 17th-century Dutch Canal through coconut groves
  • Swim and surf on the long sandy beach north of town
  • Explore St Mary's Church and Negombo's remarkable colonial Catholic heritage
  • Try fresh crab and prawn at the lagoon-side seafood restaurants
  • Ideal first-night arrival — only 20 minutes from BIA airport
