About Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park is centred on the ancient Minneriya Tank, a massive reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD. As the dry season (June to September) causes surrounding water sources to dry up, the grass that emerges around the receding tank shoreline draws elephants from across the region — and the result is one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles.
'The Gathering' at its peak (August to September) sees 200–400 wild Asian elephants on the tank shore simultaneously — families, bulls, and calves all feeding, bathing, and socialising in remarkable numbers. It's the largest known congregation of Asian elephants on earth and takes place against the backdrop of the ancient tank's bund.
Outside the elephant spectacle, Minneriya is an excellent bird reserve — the tank attracts painted storks, grey herons, little cormorants, and migratory species from October to March. Leopards are present but rarely seen in the dense surrounding forest. The park sits at the heart of the Cultural Triangle, making it easily combined with Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Dambulla.

What to See & Do
The Gathering — Elephant Congregation
August to September, the Minneriya Tank shoreline hosts the world's largest gathering of wild Asian elephants — up to 400 animals feeding, bathing, and socialising. An experience with no parallel anywhere on earth.
Minneriya Ancient Tank
Built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena, this vast reservoir covers 3,000 hectares and still irrigates the surrounding paddy fields. As it recedes in the dry season, its grass shoreline becomes the world's best elephant picnic spot.
Tank Birdwatching
The tank is one of Sri Lanka's premier bird sites — painted storks breed on the island in the centre, lesser adjutants stalk the shallows, and kingfishers line the bund. October to March brings migratory species.
Kaudulla National Park (nearby)
Adjacent to Minneriya — elephants move between the two parks seasonally. When The Gathering ends at Minneriya (October), Kaudulla becomes the better elephant sighting location. Same jeep and entry system.
Getting There from Colombo
Via Dambulla highway. Park entrance at Habarana. Most visitors combine with Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa.
Bus to Habarana, then tuk-tuk or jeep to the park entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The Gathering peaks August to September. June to October best for elephants. Bird life excellent October to March.
