About Haputale
Haputale is one of Sri Lanka's most dramatically situated towns — a narrow ridge town at 1,430m where the land falls sharply away on both sides. On a clear morning, you can see the southern coastline from one side and the eastern lowlands from the other, with tea estates rolling across every slope in between.
The town itself is small and unhurried, popular with backpackers who prefer its quieter atmosphere to the more commercial Ella (18 km away). The surrounding area is defined by the Dambatenne Tea Factory — built by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890 and still operating — and some of the finest highland walking in the country.
Lipton's Seat, a viewpoint above the Dambatenne estate that Lipton used to survey his tea kingdom, is a 5 km walk or tuk-tuk ride from town. On clear mornings it offers arguably the finest highland panorama in Sri Lanka. The walk through the tea estate to reach it passes women plucking tea — a defining Sri Lanka image.
Haputale also provides access to Horton Plains (45 km) and the dramatic Adisham Bungalow, a 1930s English manor house converted to a monastery with beautiful gardens.

What to See & Do
Lipton's Seat
The viewpoint from which Thomas Lipton surveyed his tea empire — a rocky outcrop above the Dambatenne estate with 360° views over rolling tea hills and, on clear mornings, both the south coast and eastern lowlands. Walk 5 km through tea estates or take a tuk-tuk.
Dambatenne Tea Factory
Built by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890, this working tea factory offers guided tours showing withering, rolling, fermentation, drying, and grading. One of the most complete and authentic factory tours in the hill country.
Adisham Bungalow
A 1930s English-style manor house built by Sir Thomas Lester and now a Benedictine monastery. The grounds include a terraced English garden and orchard with views over the valley. Open to visitors on weekends.
Getting There from Colombo
Train on the Badulla line via Nanu Oya. One of Sri Lanka's most scenic rail journeys. Book observation car in advance.
Via Ratnapura or Nuwara Eliya. Mountain roads are winding — allow extra time.
Best Time to Visit
January to April for clearest views. July to September also good. Avoid heavy monsoon months (May, October–November).
