About Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868m above sea level — the highest city in Sri Lanka — in the heart of the island's finest tea-growing country. The British, who colonised the highlands in the 19th century, fell so in love with its temperate climate that they built a miniature England here: Tudor-style bungalows, a horse-racing track, a golf course, hunting lodges, and rose gardens that still bloom year-round.
The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of emerald tea estates, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls, and vegetable farms that supply much of the island's produce. The air is consistently cool (15–22°C), making it a welcome respite from the tropical heat of the coast.
Horton Plains National Park, 30 km south, is home to the dramatic 'World's End' — a sheer 870m escarpment dropping from cloud forest to the southern plains. The early-morning walk through mist-shrouded grasslands to reach it is one of Sri Lanka's most unique experiences.

What to See & Do
Pedro Tea Estate & Factory
One of Nuwara Eliya's oldest working tea estates — guided factory tours walk through withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying processes, ending with a tasting of single-estate Ceylon tea.
Horton Plains & World's End
A UNESCO World Heritage plateau at 2,100m — hike 9 km through cloud forest and montane grassland to the 870m sheer escarpment of World's End. Must arrive by 6:30 AM before clouds roll in at 9:30.
Lake Gregory
A colonial-era reservoir built in 1873 — peaceful 3 km lakeside walk framed by eucalyptus-covered hills. Pedal boats available; misty mornings here are remarkable.
Victoria Park
Victorian-era gardens in the town centre — roses, dahlias, and bougainvillea in bloom March–May and July–August. A good spot for migratory birds from the Himalayan region.
Single Tree Hill
A 2,100m peak accessible by a gentle 2-hour hike from the town edge — commanding views of Nuwara Eliya town, the surrounding tea estates, and on clear days, Pidurutalagala (Sri Lanka's highest peak).
Ambewela Farm
Sri Lanka's highest dairy farm at 2,000m — a working New Zealand-style cattle farm amid rolling green hills, often called 'Sri Lanka's New Zealand.' Good for sunrise and afternoon golden light.
Hakgala Botanical Gardens
A 27-hectare botanical garden at 1,745m — rose gardens, a fern house, and a monkey population. Said to be the site of the legendary garden of Ravana in the Ramayana epic.
St. Clair's Falls
Often called the 'Little Niagara of Sri Lanka' — a 80m-wide, two-tiered cascade set in a frame of tea estate hillsides. One of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in the hill country, visible from the main Hatton–Nuwara Eliya road.
Lipton's Seat
The famous viewpoint at 1,970m where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his vast tea empire — a sweeping 360° panorama across Haputale, Ella Gap, and the southern plains. Reached by a 4WD track through Dambatenne Tea Estate.
Bambarakanda Falls
Sri Lanka's tallest waterfall at 263m — a single, slender plume of water dropping from a highland ledge into a fern-filled gorge near Belihul Oya, 35 km from Nuwara Eliya. Most powerful during the inter-monsoon months (April–May, October–November).
Peacock Hill (Pussellawa)
A lesser-known summit viewpoint near Pussellawa (30 km from Nuwara Eliya) offering panoramic views of the Kotmale Reservoir, the surrounding tea estates, and the hill country skyline — with minimal tourist traffic compared to mainstream viewpoints.
Getting There from Colombo
Takes the Pattipola route through Kandy. Some trains stop at Nanu Oya station, 10 km from town — take a tuk-tuk.
Via Kandy on the A5 road through tea country. Road is narrow and winding from Kandy.
Change at Kandy for a direct Nuwara Eliya service. Several daily departures.
Nuwara Eliya is often combined with Ella on a hill country loop. The Nanu Oya → Ella train section is the most scenic.
Best Time to Visit
April–May is the local New Year / Sinhala New Year season with festivals. Avoid May–September for heavy mist and rain.
