About Ella
Ella is a small mountain village in Sri Lanka's southern hill country, perched at around 1,000m elevation with a dramatically open valley panorama unlike anywhere else on the island. The town has grown from a quiet backpacker stop into one of Sri Lanka's most beloved destinations — yet it has largely retained its relaxed, low-key character.
The Nine Arch Bridge — a gravity-defying colonial-era viaduct built entirely from brick and stone without steel — is Ella's most iconic sight. The best time to see it is when a blue train rolls through the jungle canopy above the arches. Timing is everything.
The surrounding hills offer excellent hiking: Little Adam's Peak rewards with sweeping valley views after a 45-minute gentle climb, while Ella Rock demands a more serious 3–4 hour trek through tea estates and forest. The Ravana Falls, a short tuk-tuk ride away, is one of Sri Lanka's widest and most accessible cascades.

What to See & Do
Nine Arch Bridge (Demodara Bridge)
A 1921 colonial viaduct of nine stone arches, 30m high, threading through dense jungle canopy. Best experienced when a blue train rolls through — check the timetable before heading out.
Little Adam's Peak
A gentle 45-minute hike through tea estates to a 1,141m summit with sweeping views of the Ella Gap valley and surrounding mountains. Ideal at sunrise — clear sky guaranteed before 8 AM.
Ella Rock
A more demanding 3–4 hour hike through tea estates and forest to a rocky summit ridge with dramatic 270° views across the hill country. Route follows the train tracks past Demodara station.
Ravana Falls
One of Sri Lanka's widest cascades — 25m wide and tumbling into a rocky pool just 6 km from Ella town. A short tuk-tuk ride; popular for a refreshing dip in the dry season.
Tea Factory Tours
Working tea factories in the hills around Ella (Newburgh, Uva Halpewatte) offer guided tours showing the full journey from plucked leaf to packaged tea, with a tasting session at the end.
Mini World's End
A less-visited viewpoint a short walk from Little Adam's Peak — a sheer 500m drop into the Ella Gap valley, framed by tea estates on both sides. Far fewer visitors than Horton Plains.
Diyaluma Falls
Sri Lanka's second-tallest waterfall at 220m — famous for the natural infinity pools that form in the rock near the top, where the water fans out before the main drop. A 1.5-hour hike from the road leads to the upper pools. Located near Haputale, 25 km from Ella.
Getting There from Colombo
The Kandy–Ella leg is the scenic highlight — book observation car seats weeks in advance. Full journey: Colombo Fort → Kandy → Ella.
Via Expressway to Matara or A4 through Ratnapura. Mountainous final section to Ella.
Change at Wellawaya. Bus through hill country is scenic but slow on mountain roads.
The train from Kandy (3.5 hours) is the classic approach — book Class 1 observation car for guaranteed window seats.
Best Time to Visit
May–July and October–December bring significant rain. The Uva Province has its own micro-climate.
