About Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, meaning 'Sacred Footprint') is Sri Lanka's most revered mountain. At 2,243m, it is not the island's highest peak — but no other mountain in Sri Lanka commands the spiritual authority of this conical summit, which holds what four faiths each claim as a sacred footprint: the Buddha's (for Buddhists), Shiva's (for Hindus), Adam's (for Muslims), and St Thomas the Apostle's (for Christians).
The climbing season runs from December to May, when tens of thousands of pilgrims and hikers make the pre-dawn ascent by torchlight. The classic route from Dalhousie involves 5,500 steps — illuminated by a chain of light that winds up the mountain like a ribbon of stars — and takes 3–4 hours to climb. The reward at the summit is one of the most celebrated sunrise views in Asia: the mountain's triangular shadow projected across the cloud-filled valleys as the sun breaks the horizon.
The mountain sits at the edge of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary — a vast area of montane rainforest and cloud forest that is home to leopards, sambar deer, and dozens of endemic bird species. The trail passes through tea estates, waterfalls, and settlements of pilgrims who have been making this journey for centuries.

What to See & Do
Summit Climb — Sri Pada
The 5,500-step pre-dawn ascent from Dalhousie — 3.5 km, 3–4 hours one way. The chain of lights winding up the mountain at night, thousands of pilgrims, tea sellers, and resting shrines all along the route makes it one of Asia's most unique hiking experiences.
Sri Pada Summit Shrine
The temple at the 2,243m summit housing the Sacred Footprint — a 1.5m depression in the rock venerated simultaneously by Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims. The triangular shadow cast by the peak at sunrise is one of the rarest optical phenomena in the world.
Peak Wilderness Sanctuary Trails
The vast montane rainforest around Adam's Peak — home to leopards, sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, and endemic birds including the Sri Lanka whistling thrush and spot-winged thrush. Several lower-altitude trails can be walked without the summit climb.
Dalhousie Tea Estate Walk
The approach road to the trailhead passes through spectacular highland tea estates — early risers see pluckers at work at dawn. The Hatton–Dalhousie road itself is one of the most scenic drives in the hill country.
Getting There from Colombo
Drive to Dalhousie village (the trailhead). Most visitors arrive by 10 PM to start the night climb.
Take the Kandy line to Hatton station, then local bus or three-wheeler to Dalhousie (20 km).
Direct buses from Colombo to Nallathanniya/Dalhousie run during the pilgrimage season (Dec–May).
Base in Dalhousie village the night before — numerous simple guesthouses cater specifically to climbers. Start the ascent at midnight or 2 AM for a sunrise summit.
Best Time to Visit
Season runs December–May (Poya / full-moon nights draw the largest crowds). Peak season is January–March. The mountain is officially closed June–November due to monsoon and dangerous conditions.
Traveller Tips
- ▸Start the climb at midnight or 1 AM from Dalhousie to reach the summit for sunrise — the 4:45–5:30 AM window is key
- ▸Bring warm layers (it can be 5°C at the top) and a waterproof jacket — the summit is exposed and windy
- ▸Carry water — stalls sell refreshments on the way up, but prices increase with altitude
- ▸The descent is harder on knees than the ascent — poles recommended for those with knee issues
- ▸Full-moon (Poya) nights during season draw enormous crowds — if you prefer a quieter climb, avoid these dates
- ▸The Dalhousie guesthouses fill weeks ahead during peak season (January–March) — book early
