About Tangalle

Tangalle is the eastern extremity of the southern tourist belt, far enough from Galle and Hikkaduwa that the beach crowd thins considerably. The coastline here is wilder — a string of separate beaches separated by rocky headlands, each with its own character. The main town has a working fishing harbour and Dutch colonial remnants, while the beaches spread east and west from the centre.

Tangalle's biggest draw for nature lovers is sea turtle nesting. Rekawa Beach, 12 km east of town, is one of Sri Lanka's most important nesting sites for five species of sea turtle (green, loggerhead, olive ridley, leatherback, and hawksbill). The Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project runs guided night watches during nesting season (April to September) where visitors watch nesting females from just metres away.

The large Tangalle Lagoon behind the main beach is excellent for kayaking and birdwatching — home to water birds, kingfishers, and migrant waders. The pace of life is noticeably slower than the surf towns to the west.

Highlights

  • Watch nesting sea turtles at Rekawa Beach — guided night walks April to September
  • Kayak the Tangalle Lagoon among water birds and mangrove channels
  • Find your own quiet beach — multiple uncrowded coves east of town
  • Swim in the strong Indian Ocean surf at Medaketiya Beach
  • Excellent seafood at the harbour-side restaurants
  • Day-trip to Mulkirigala Rock Temple — rock caves and ancient murals 16 km north
