About Mirissa
Mirissa is a small fishing village turned beach resort on Sri Lanka's south coast, built around a perfect crescent bay framed by a rocky headland with a coconut palm-covered island at one end. It is the undisputed whale watching capital of Sri Lanka — the warm waters of the Indian Ocean just offshore are among the most reliable places in the world to see blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth.
The whale watching season runs November to April, when the north-east monsoon keeps the south coast calm and visibility is excellent. Blue whales are the star attraction, but sperm whales, pods of spinner dolphins, and occasional orca are also regularly sighted.
Beyond the whales, Mirissa is one of the south coast's most appealing beach destinations — less party-focused than Hikkaduwa, more developed than Tangalle, with a good range of accommodation and seafood restaurants right on the beach. The Parrot Rock viewpoint on the western headland provides one of the finest coastal panoramas on the island.
Highlights

What to See & Do
Whale and Dolphin Watching
Early-morning boat tours from Mirissa harbour (Nov–Apr) — blue whales regularly sighted within 15 km offshore, alongside sperm whales and large spinner dolphin pods.
Parrot Rock
A large headland rock at the western end of the beach — accessible via a short path or low-tide rock hop — with a 360° panoramic view over the bay and Indian Ocean horizon. Best at sunrise.
Mirissa Beach
The main crescent bay — clean sand, calm morning waters ideal for swimming, and gentle afternoon waves good for beginner surfing. Coconut Tree Hill at the eastern end is a photogenic landmark.
Weligama Bay
A wide, shallow bay 10 km west of Mirissa — Sri Lanka's most popular location for beginner surf lessons. Gentle rolling waves, multiple surf schools, and good seafood restaurants on the beach.
Coconut Tree Hill
A small grassy headland crowned with a row of leaning coconut palms at the eastern end of Mirissa Beach — one of the most photographed spots on the Sri Lanka south coast, especially at sunset.
Mirissa Harbour Fish Market
The working fishing harbour at the eastern end of the beach — boats return at dawn, and the fish market is most active by 7 AM. Freshest catch for the beachfront restaurants and a window into fishing village life.
Getting There from Colombo
Take coastal train to Matara, then bus or tuk-tuk the final 15 km to Mirissa.
Intercity express to Matara, then local bus to Mirissa. Or direct minibus services operate from Colombo.
Via Southern Expressway (E01) to Pinnaduwa exit then coastal road. Very comfortable drive.
Mirissa is on the south coast circuit — most visitors combine it with Galle (45 km west) and Tangalle (45 km east) on a coastal route.
Best Time to Visit
Nov–Apr is dry season for the south coast and peak whale watching. May–October brings the south-west monsoon — rough seas and poor whale watching conditions.
Traveller Tips
- ▸Book whale watching the evening before — the best tours fill up fast in peak season
- ▸Take seasickness medication if you're susceptible — the open ocean swells can be significant
- ▸Parrot Rock is best at sunrise — arrive before 6:00 AM
- ▸The fish market restaurants on the beach eastern end serve the freshest grilled seafood at fair prices
- ▸Avoid cheap operators offering shared whale watching boats for USD 15 — licensed tours with marine biologist guides are worth the premium
- ▸Stilt fishermen (traditional perch fishing on poles) are visible at dawn near Koggala and Ahangama (20 km west)
